English Functional Skills Entry Level 2 Speaking and Listening

This resource has been designed for students working towards Entry Level 2 Functional Skills English certification. It contains an age-appropriate, 40-page booklet with fifteen speaking, listening and communication tasks on the Entry Level 2 speaking and listening component. The tasks have been designed to achieve the following learning outcomes:

to Identify and extract the main information and detail from short explanations
to make requests and ask clear questions appropriately in different contexts
to respond appropriately to straightforward questions
to follow the gist of discussions
to clearly express straightforward information and communicate feelings and
opinions on a range of straightforward topics
to make appropriate contributions to simple group discussions with others about a straightforward topic

The speaking and listening tasks include:

School Christmas Fair – group discussion about what activity to do – cake stall, face painting or ‘beat the goalie’
Which Charity? – small group discussion on which charity the proceeds from the fair should go to – Childline, The Trussel Trust (supports food banks) or the RSPCA
Missing Jeans – paired role play telephone conversation enquiring about jeans ordered on-line have not arrived
A Dilemma – role play about a friend asking to borrow money when they previously had not paid back their last loan
A Dilemma – group discussion
Part-Time Job at Coffee Cafe – paired role play telephone enquiry about the part-time job
Dental Appointment – paired role play about making a dental appointment on the telephone for a check up
Driving Lessons – paired role play about enquiring about driving lessons
Getting to Know You – asking questions in pairs
Favourite Singer Band – pair or small group discussion
Food Likes and Dislikes – pair or small group discussion
Supermarket Announcement – listening task – accompanying differentiated worksheets
Airport Announcement – listening task – accompanying differentiated worksheets
News Report – listening task – accompanying differentiated worksheets
Cafe Menu – listening to instructions task
