English Functional Skills – Entry Level 3 – Speaking and Listening

This resource has been designed for students working towards Entry Level 3 Functional Skills English certification. It contains an age-appropriate, 40-page booklet with twenty speaking, listening and communication tasks on the Entry Level 3 speaking and listening component. The tasks have been designed to achieve the following learning outcomes:

to identify and extract relevant information and detail in straightforward explanations
to make requests and ask concise questions using appropriate language in different contexts
to communicate information and opinions clearly on a range of topics
to respond appropriately to questions on a range of straightforward topics
to follow and understand the main points of discussions
to make relevant contributions to group discussions about straightforward topics
to listen to and respond appropriately to other points of view, respecting the convention of turn-taking

School Uniform – group discussion
Missing pizza – paired role play telephone conversation enquiring about a take-away pizza order that has not arrived
Booking a Haircut – paired role play on making an appointment for a haircut
A Dilemma – role play about a friend asking to borrow your trainers when they have previously borrowed your jeans and he/she has not yet returned them
Part-Time Job at Costless Supermarket – paired role play telephone enquiry about the part-time job
Job interview at Costless Supermarket
Apartment to rent – paired role play telephone conversation about asking for a viewing of the apartment
Joe’s Gym – paired role play telephone conversation enquiring about month’s free trial
Getting to Know You – asking questions in pairs
Supermarket Announcement – listening task – accompanying differentiated worksheets
Liverpool Station Announcement – listening task – accompanying differentiated worksheets
News Report – listening task – accompanying differentiated worksheets
